SAORI:SILK retreat 2021

Silk fibre and shuttle

Spinning and Weaving Retreat 25 – 30 September 2021

Unsure about spinning silk? On this SAORI:SILK retreat you will sample its many forms from the shorter textured noils to the long and lustrous fibres in a silk brick. What are caps and hankies? What is throwsters waste? Master the art of the different methods of spinning all of these.

We will also cover interesting facts and stories of silk, its history, folk tales and cultivation including, hopefully, a look at live wild silk moths. Our last morning will be a hands-on how to process their cocoons.

SAORI weaving

This time we have chosen to work on a narrow black cotton warp with black cotton weft so that your handspun silks will ‘pop’. The cotton is soft and matt allowing the silks to feature as inlay, supplementary threads, clasped wefts, and more. As always with SAORI, intuition and self exploration are key but guidance and group support will help to inspire.

Chris Jukes of Christine Jukes Fibre Craft ( is an extremely experienced and knowledgeable teacher and what she doesn’t know she can certainly find out for you.

Rosie Green, owner of SAORImôr, has been weaving for over 40 years and has the skills and expertise to guide and encourage you on your own Saori journey.
